No. 17 Wheeling sweeps Notre Dame, 3-0

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio (Oct. 29) – The No. 17 Wheeling University volleyball team picked up a 3-0 sweep at Notre Dame (Ohio) Tuesday evening in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) match.

TEAM LEADERS
  • Junior Cassie Meyer (Jackson Center, Ohio/Jackson Center) led the team in kills for the second-straight match. She posted 17 kills, which is a season-high for the 2018 AVCA All-American in a three-set match.
  • Meyer also scooped up 17 digs to register a kill-dig double-double.
  • Senior Stephanie Sylvester (Oregon, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy), who was named the MEC Player of the Week earlier in the day, dished out 42 assists and helped the offense hit .293 on the night.
  • Senior Haley Kramer (Norwalk, Ohio/Monroeville) collected 11 kills on 25 attacks (.360 hitting percentage) with four blocks.
  • Junior Breanna Kramer (Norwalk, Ohio/Monroeville) also contributed a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs in the win.
  • Junior Audrey Francis (Sidney, Ohio/Fairlawn) finished the evening with a match-high 22 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals got off to a fast start with leads of 7-3, 17-9, and 22-11 before cruising to a 25-15 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
  • Notre Dame hung around early in the second set and tied the game at 8-8.
  • Wheeling rolled off 12 of the next 14 points to race out to a commanding 20-10 lead. The Cards eventually went on to win the set 25-13 to take a 2-0 lead.
  • The Falcons managed to force a match-high seven attack errors in the third set and erased an early 7-2 Cardinal lead to take a 15-11 edge.
  • Wheeling battled back to a tie at 19-19, before an attack by Sylvester went down for a 20-19 lead.
  • With the set tied at 21, the Cardinals closed out the match with four-straight points, including consecutive kills by Bre Kramer, to collect the team's ninth MEC win this season.

  • Wheeling returns home to the McDonough Center on Friday, November 1 to take on Fairmont State in a MEC match at 7 p.m.
