Cards and Cavs Split Friday’s Twin Bill

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit baseball team picked up its first Mountain East Conference victory of the season Friday afternoon, as the Cardinals and the Virginia Wise Cavaliers split the doubleheader one game apiece.

Wheeling Jesuit received a solid game-one outing from Michael Finch to secure their first league victory of the season. Finch tossed a complete-game while allowing zero earned runs and fanning three Cavaliers.

In game two, the Cardinals fell behind 4-0 and later fell to the Virginia Wise Cavaliers, 6-5. Dillon Sunnafrank blasted a game-tying three run homer in the home half of the eighth, but UVa-Wise scored again in the ninth to earn the split.

Game 1 notes:
Winning pitcher – Michael Finch (1-0)
Losing pitcher – Nathan Hatmaker (2-4)

Recap:
Michael Finch shut down the opposing Cavaliers, as UVa-Wise scored just once in the first inning by way of an error.

The Cardinals answered and hung a three spot in the bottom half of the second inning.

Christopher Minder drew a walk to begin the WJU rally, followed by an Adam Dennison one-hop double to the right-centerfield gap. Logan Schickler followed Dennison with a double of his own, putting the Cardinals ahead 2-1. Jagger Bruck later singled to score Schickler, WJU's third run of the inning and game.

Finch would hold the Cavs to just three hits the rest of the way, as WJU took game one of the doubleheader, 3-1.

Game 2 notes:
Winning pitcher – Dylan Luttrell (2-0)
Losing pitcher – Logan Menear (0-1)
Save – Nate Thompson (1)

Recap:
The two clubs battled through two innings of scoreless baseball before a WJU error in the third allowed Wise to plate four unearned runs.

After two quick outs in the third, a grounder to third was misplayed and the Cavaliers would indeed capitalize, taking a 4-0 lead. Wise added its fifth run of the game in the seventh inning, but the Cardinals would not go down without a fight.

In the home half of the eighth, Christopher Brake led off with a single to the left-centerfield gap. Drake May singled to left in the next at bat, and two runners were on with no outs.

Dennison reached by an error on the Cavalier shortstop, and Brake scored. Dalton Davis singled in May in the next at bat, and WJU trailed by just three, 5-2, with no outs and two runners on in the eighth.

Dillon Sunnafrank, the Cardinals top returning hitter from a year ago, stepped to the plate in a moment where WJU needed him most. Dillon jumped ahead 3-0 in the count, but was given the go ahead to swing on the fourth pitch of the at bat. Coach Terry Edwards sure did make the right decision, as Sunnafrank blasted a no-doubt home run well over the left-centerfield fence, knotting the game at five apiece.

Virginia Wise jumped back ahead, 6-5, in the ninth inning, but WJU nearly sent the game into extra innings.

RJ Harris reached to lead off the inning, and was pinch ran for by TJ Jacob. Brake laid down a well-executed sacrifice bunt and advanced Jacob to second. May and Dennison had chances to drive in the go-ahead run, but the Cavaliers held off the Cardinals, 6-5.
