WJU Baseball – Weekend Preview – Cards Travel to Pioneers and Bobcats

WHEELING, W.Va. – Mountain East Conference action is right around the corner for the Wheeling Jesuit baseball team. The Cardinals begin 2017 league play with a pair of road doubleheaders. 
 
WJU first travels to Glenville State on Sunday, March 19 for a one o'clock first pitch. On Monday, the Cardinals take to the road to face the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. 
 
WJU Notes:
WJU enters the weekend 1-9, with all 10 games being played in the Russ-Matt Invitational in Winter Haven, Florida. 
 
At the plate, WJU is led by Drake May's 12 hits. In 10 games, May is hitting .343 with four runs scored and four RBI's. Matthew Angelini finished the spring trip hitting .308 with eight hits and a pair of RBI's. Logan Schickler blasted one home run and drove in four runs over the 10-game stretch in Florida. Dalton Davis hit .231 with a team-leading five runs scored. 
 
On the hill, Kyle Rees has thrown a team-high 12.1 innings in three appearances. Rees has charted an earned run average of 2.19. Michael Finch has thrown 11 innings in two starts and has a team-low 1.64 ERA. Josh Bell threw 10 innings in Florida, earning the lone Cardinal win while posting a 2.70 ERA.  
 
Glenville State Notes:
The Pioneers enter the weekend 1-8 on the season, with their lone win coming over Mercyhurst on Feb. 19. John Peloro and Tanner Helms are tied for the team lead in hits with 10 apiece. Helms has eight RBI's while Peloro has six. Helms also leads the Pioneers in ERA, charting a 2.31 mark over 11.2 innings pitched. 
 
2016 Season Series: 
The Cardinals won the first game of the 2016 doubleheader, with Dillon Sunnafrank tossing a complete-game in WJU's 3-1 victory. Cody Hudson drove in a run. In the second of the two games, Glenville jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two frames and went on to win, 9-4. Jagger Bruck, Christopher Brake, Sunnafrank and Hudson all drove in a run in game two. 
 
WV Wesleyan Notes: 
The Bobcats are 1-11 on the season, with their victory coming over Chestnut Hill on March 10. James Fraser leads WVWC with 14 hits in 37 at bats. John Koon has 11 hits while Austin Keene has 10. Alex Wall has thrown 13.2 innings with a 6.59 ERA while Griffin Roe has charted a 3.38 ERA over 10.2 innings of work. 
 
2016 Season Series: 
In the 2016 season series, Wesleyan took game one, 2-1, over the Cardinals. WJU led 1-0 after the first frame thanks to a Sunnafrank RBI, but Wesleyan scored two late-inning runs to defeat the Cardinals. Benjamin Standiford was credited with the game two victory, as the Cardinals led 6-3 after five innings of play. Sunnafrank added another pair of RBI'S while Adam Dennison and Bruck each contributed one RBI.
