Box Score 2 ATHENS, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit baseball team split a twin bill with the Concord Mountain Lions on Monday afternoon, as the Cardinals took game one, 8-6, before falling in game two, 19-4.
The Cardinals took a six-run lead, 8-2, after scoring six runs in the fourth inning of game one. The Mountain Lions brought home 10 runners in the first inning of game two. Joe San Felippo earned the victory for WJU in the first game, while Logan Hudson was pinned with the game two loss.
WJU is now 3-1 in Mountain East Conference play while Concord holds a 2-2 mark.
Game 1:
Dillon Sunnafrank continued to stay hot early for the Cardinals. The Cambridge, Ohio native slugged a solo homerun in the top of the second inning to give WJU a 1-0 lead. Concord struck for the next two runs, but the Cardinals scored once in the third and six times in the fourth to open up an 8-2 lead.
Joe San Felippo singled to the left side to bring home Adam Dennison in the third inning before WJU erupted in the fourth frame.
Shaun Gaydos started the Cardinals rally with a single down the left field line. Logan Schickler was hit by a pitch, and Christopher Brake reached on a bunt single. Dennison drove in Gaydos with a base hit before Tony Connacher drew a bases loaded walk, bringing home Schickler.
Brock McGivern brought home Brake by way of a sacrifice fly. San Felippo reached safely on an error and Dennison scored. Sunnafrank doubled to deep center field to score San Felippo and Connacher, and cap the Cardinals six run inning.
San Felippo earned the victory for WJU after charting four innings and two strikeouts. Cody Hudson tallied a nine-out save, allowing only one base hit.
Game 2:
Concord jumped to an early 10-0 lead in the first inning after tallying eight hits. WJU cut into the Mountain Lion lead and scored three runs in the top half of the second inning.
Schickler reached first after being hit by a pitch. Brake reached on a fielder's choice before Christopher Minder singled to center to bring home both Schickler and Brake. Patrick Biega drove in Minder on a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
Concord added runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to win the contest, 19-4.
Logan Hudson took the loss for WJU. Kyle Rees relieved Hudson and completed five innings. Matthew Angelini threw the final 2.1 innings for the Cardinals.
Minder went three for four at the plate and scored once in game two. Connacher, McGivern, Sunnafrank, and Biega accounted for the other four WJU hits.
The Cardinals return to action on Friday, March 25 when they host Glenville State College in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. WJU then hosts West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday, March 26.
