Box Score WINTERHAVEN, Fla. – Despite hitting three homeruns in the first game, the Wheeling Jesuit baseball team was topped by the Gannon University Golden Knights, 11-10 and 16-1, on Tuesday.
Kyle Rees started on the bump for the Cardinals in game one. He allowed seven earned runs over 2.2 innings.
WJU took a 2-1 lead in the first inning off a two-run blast by Dillon Sunnafrank.
Matthew Angelini took the loss for WJU, as he threw the final 3.1 innings for WJU and allowed four runs.
Logan Schickler and Tony Connacher joined Sunnafrank with homerun blasts of their own. Schickler drove in two runs, while Connacher brought home one.
Brock McGivern went two for two with a pair of doubles and a run scored in game one. Joe San Felippo added a double of his own while driving in one run. Shaun Gaydos doubled in two runs in the third inning to give WJU a 5-1 advantage.
In game two, Logan Menear looked to avenge the first game loss for WJU as he started on the hill. The freshman lasted 1.2 innings and allowed 13 runs, two of which were earned.
John Staab relieved Menear and also lasted 1.2 innings. He struck out two hitters while walking three and allowing three runs.
Christopher Minder charted the final 3.2 innings for WJU. He struck out four hitters and did not allow a run.
Connacher laced a double and scored a run in the game two loss.
WJU returns to the diamond for a doubleheader with Tiffin University of Ohio on Thursday, March 3 at 11:30 a.m.
