WINTERHAVEN, Fla. – Sunday afternoon marked the beginning of the 2016 Spring Trip for the Wheeling Jesuit baseball team. The Cardinals will compete against five different opponents over the next week.

WJU dropped its first two games of the trip, 6-2 and 10-0, to Adelphi University. The Cardinals drop to 0-5 on the early season, while Adelphi improves to 4-1.

WJU allowed all six of the Panthers runs in the first contest to cross in the same inning. Starting pitcher Logan Hudson was charged with one earned run, as the Cardinals committed multiple errors in game one.

The Cardinals scored a run in the fifth and seventh innings to account for their two. Matthew Angelini crushed his first career home run in the top of the seventh inning.

Hudson threw three innings for the Cardinals, striking out and walking one Panther. His brother, Cody Hudson, tallied the next two innings while allowing zero runs. Angelini charted a scoreless last inning for the Cardinals.

Jagger Bruck drove in the first Cardinal run in the top of the fifth inning. The junior outfielder drove in Logan Schickler off a double. WJU finished with seven hits.

Ben Standiford took the loss in game two as he lasted five innings and gave up six runs, two of which were earned. He struck out two Panthers while walking one.

Kyle Rees relieved Standiford and completed the sixth inning. He allowed three earned runs while striking out and walking two hitters. Logan Menear walked one and was charged for one earned run in the last inning.

Freshman John Staab reached safely on a double in the seventh inning for WJU. The Cardinals finished with five hits.

The Cardinals face off with Mountain East Conference member West Virginia Wesleyan on Monday at 12:15 p.m.
