Box Score 2 CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – The Wheeling Jesuit baseball team opened its season with a doubleheader against Ohio Dominican University Saturday afternoon. The games were played in Chillicothe, Ohio at the V.A. Memorial Stadium, home of the Chillicothe Paints.
Ohio Dominican took both contests from the Cardinals, 11-5 and 11-0.
The Cardinals dropped the first game, 11-5. Benjamin Standiford, a 6-6 junior from Cambridge, Ohio took the loss for WJU. The junior hurler lasted three innings, as he allowed nine runs, three of which were earned. He struck out four on the afternoon.
Ohio Dominican scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Both teams went scoreless in the second inning before the Cardinals scored two runs of their own in the top of the third.
Dillon Sunnafrank drove in the first Cardinal run with a double in the third. Matthew Angelini followed Sunnafrank with an RBI of his own off a single.
The Panthers responded to score six runs in the bottom half of the inning. ODU added two more in the bottom of the fifth, making it an 11-2 lead.
WJU did not go down without a fight. Christopher Brake tripled in the top of the seventh to drive in two runs. Angelini added another single to record his second RBI of the game. WJU went on to lose the first game, 11-5.
Sunnfrank finished 3-3 with two singles, a double, and a RBI. Angelini finished with two singles and two RBI's. Brake tallied his triple and two RBI's.
Kyle Rees threw 1.2 innings for WJU, allowing one earned run. Cody Hudson threw 1.1 innings and struck out one hitter.
ODU took the second of the games, 11-0, over WJU.
Logan Hudson took the loss for the Cardinals. The senior threw three innings and allowed 10 runs, seven of which were earned. He struck out two and walked four.
Logan Menear recorded three scoreless innings on the mound for the Cardinals.
WJU faces Ohio Dominican on Sunday in a 9-inning contest beginning at 1 p.m.
