WJU Men Defeat, NDC, Women Split at Cal

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – On a rainy Friday night outside, the Cardinals swimmers were showing strong inside in the California University of Pennsylvania pool. The Wheeling Jesuit men defeated Notre Dame College, while the women split two dual match scores – prevailing over Notre Dame College and falling in a close total against Cal.

The Cardinals men bested the Falcons, 134-56. The Vulcans women posted a 107-86 total over the Cardinals. WJU took a 138-45 win over Notre Dame College.

On the men's side, WJU won eight of the 10 events. Both Jake Braumbaugh and Tomas Caixeta were triple winners. Braumbaugh claimed the 100 back (54.14), 200 IM (2:04.83) and part of the 200 medley relay (1:41.39) with Zach Hamm, Brett Dipuma and Nick Friday.

Caixeta recorded the best times in the 100 breast (1:00.74) and 100 fly (52.48), while a member of the 400 free relay (3:20.20) with Vince Zellin, Colton Claytor and Lucas Rhodes.

Rhodes won two individual events – 500 free (5:05.61) and 1000 free (10:37.49).

First-year swimmer Nick Sionkiewicz garnered three runner-up placings – 100 back (56.86), 100 breast (1:06.46) and 200 IM (2:07.72). Matheus Bonjovani was second in the 1000 free (11:01.48) and 500 free (5:22.19) events.

Freshman Regan Nolan produced the best WJU women's night. Nolan won the 1000 free (11:27.50) and was part of the winning 400 free relay team with Sloane Glover, Abbi Strennan and Anna Davis (3:56.17). Nolan also was second in the 500 free (5:32.68).

Davis touched the wall for the final Cardinals top placing – 100 free (56.49). Jade Worrels added a second in the 100 breast (1:11.89) and a third in the 200 free (2:06.01). Glover finished second in the 100 fly (1:02.63).

The WJU teams have a week off before they travel to Grove City College for a Saturday, Nov. 5, dual meet. First event begins at 1 p.m.
