Shippensburg, Pa., Feb. 5, 2015 – Jesuit Wrestling took to the road to take on the Red Raiders of Shippensburg University on Thursday night. Despite thrilling pins by
Dominick Nania and
Sawyer Leppla, WJU could not hold on for the victory, losing to Shippensburg 22-18.
As the match began, Shippensburg's Dante Sheffenino pinned
Dustin Warner. Wheeling Jesuit was immediately down 6-0. In the next match, WJU's
Nolan Whitely took SHU's Karl Lightner to double overtime before losing a 2-1 decision. Wheeling Jesuit was down 9-0.
In the 141 pound match that followed, Wheeling Jesuit's
Preston Bowshier won a 3-2 decision, getting Jesuit on the board 9-3.
The next match featured Shippensburg's Cameron Throckmorton against WJU's
Skyler Terrell. Terrell lost a major decision to Throckmorton as WJU trailed 13-3.
Dominick Nania pinned Shippensburg's Mike Springer in 3:13 to pull WJU within four points, 13-9.
Nania's pin seemed to fuel the Cardinals. WJU would win the next two matches. In the 165 pound match, WJU's
Anthony Smith won a 5-2 decision over the Red Raiders Arthur Watkins. Then
Sawyer Leppla of Wheeling Jesuit pinned Shippensburg's Hunter Fenk at 5:35. Jesuit found itself in the lead for the first time in the match up 18-13.
But, when it came to the heavyweight matches, Jesuit stumbled and lost the last three matches of the night. WJU's
Ryan Winslow lost a 7-4 decision to Shippensburg's Kyle Taylor in the 184 pound match. The Cardinals'
Maxwell Lacey lost a 5-2 decision to the Red Raiders Jalal Paige in the 197 pound match. Finally, Wheeling Jesuit's
Corey Siegfried lost a 6-1 decision to Shippensburg's Francis Slover in the 285 pound match. Final score – Shippensburg 22 Wheeling Jesuit 18.
The loss moves the Jesuit Wrestling program's record to 8-4. Jesuit Wrestling continues on the road when they hit the mat on back to back nights against East Stroudsburg University on Friday at 7pm.
