Women defeat Malone; Men edged by Pioneers

CANTON, Ohio – On Friday evening in the pool, the Wheeling Jesuit women's swimming team prevailed over host Malone University, while the Cardinal men were edged by the Pioneers.

The Cardinal women claimed the top spot in only five of the 12 events, but their team outscored Malone, 113-98. The WJU men tied the women with five event wins, but Malone won the dual match, 117-95.

Women's Highlights

Junior Anna Davis proved to be the night's fastest swimmer. She touched the wall first in both the 50 free (25.78) and 100 free events (54.57)
, while also being the anchor of the second-place 400 medley relay (4:12.74).

Vanessa Gipson posted first
inthe 1000 free (11:04.78) and second in the 500 free (5:24.93).  Maria Palmquist was the top 200 back swimmer in 2:19.83.

The WJU final first place came in the 200 free relay of Taylor Ulisse, Palmquist, Sarah Peters and Stefanie Boburka with a 1:51.93 time.

Both Rachel Yontz and Jade Worrels
registeredtwo second places each. Yontz had hers in the 400 individual medley (4:52.58) and 200 butterfly (2:16.27). Worrels touched in second for both the 200 free (2:01.64) and 100 free (56.07).

Men's Highlights

Gonzalo Vegas, 
Jandre Strauss and Jakub Swierczynski took first in one event and were three-fourths of the winning 400 medley relay for the WJU men.

The three teamed with
VincentZellin for the 400 Medley relay winning time of 3:29.41. Vegas touched first in the 200 backstroke (1:53.20).

Strauss was tops for the 100 free (48.23) and second in the 50 free (21.88). Swierczynski grabbed first for the 200 breaststroke (2:09.24) and second in the 200 free (1:46.16).

Lucas Rhodes completed the Cardinal event winners with a 500 free title (4:59.18) and runner-up
inthe 1000 free (10:23.31).

Zellin, Vegas, Rhodes and Kuba Skrzypczak combined for second in the 200 free relay (1:26.47).

The WJU swimming teams have a week off before they travel to face Grove City College in a dual meet on Saturday, Nov. 14, in a 1 p.m. start.
