Wheeling Jesuit Men’s Soccer off to a 2-0 start on Frommeyer goal in 2OT

Box Score

Fresh off of a win in their season opener, the Men's Soccer team returned home on Saturday to play a well-known competitor, Philadelphia University, on the new synthetic surface at Bishop Schmitt Field at high noon.

The Cardinals carried over the momentum they had from their victory over Point Park University two nights before, dominating the first half of action.  Sophomore midfielder Aitor Iniguez DeHerida scored an arching goal on a free kick after junior midfielder Vincent Faraji got fouled by a Philadelphia University defender, putting Wheeling Jesuit University up 1-0 at the break.

Senior goalkeeper Cody Thompson stood tall in goal blocking four shots in the first half to maintain the lead, while freshman forward Trey Tucker just missed in the final minute of the half on a shot that barely went high over the net.

The second half featured strong defensive play for 44 minutes of the frame.  Junior defenseman J.J. Hawkshaw made an unbelievable save on a ball that got behind goalkeeper Thompson.  Sophomore defenseman Shaan Stuart thwarted any penetration Philadelphia made into the offensive zone.  But, with 1:02 left in the game, Philadelphia's Ishmaiah Calwrie put a goal home for Philadelphia University to tie the game 1-1.

After a scoreless first overtime, sophomore forward Jordan Frommeyer scored the game winner at 7:54 of the second overtime, giving Wheeling Jesuit's team their second win in as many games.

"Obviously Thursday night took a lot of energy out of us.  We deserved the lead with a great free kick by Aitor Iniguez DeHerida.  It was a well played half of soccer.  In the second half we got a little tired because of coming off that Thursday night game.   Unfortunately, we gave up the tying score in the last minute.  In the overtime, we pulled them together, told them we are going to try and win this game, and make sure they go after the win.  I am proud of the way we regrouped after a late game goal that could have deflated us.  Instead, we stepped up to the challenge and scored the goal to win the game," stated Head Coach Jimmy Regan.
