Cardinal’s Quest for Playoffs Cut Short By West Liberty

Box Score

WHEELING, W.Va. – In a game you'd be hard-pressed to find greater meaning in; the Wheeling Jesuit baseball squad fell to their cross town rivals West Liberty 4-8 in a must-win scenario for the Cardinals.

With the WJU loss, the Hilltoppers claim the sixth and final spot in the Mountain East Conference post season. The Cardinals move to 17-26 overall on the season, and 17-22 in MEC play with a .436 winning percentage. In order to make the post season, WJU needed to complete a four game sweep of their neighbors to the north.

Saturday's double-header was cut short by rain, so the two teams only managed to get off only one game, but it was the one that counted for WJU.

Tony Connacher led the Cardinals, scoring two runs and picking up a single base hit.

One of Connacher's runs came in the first inning when Patrick Ammar flied out to center field on a sac fly bringing him in to score on an RBI.

The run put WJU up 1-0 in the first inning, but he lead wouldn't last long with West Liberty putting up three runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 1-3 heading into the top of the second.

The Cards put themselves right back in it, tying the game at three in the top of the third on a wild play. Chad Ford reached base on an error by second base. Mike Adams was put out at second but Connacher and Pat Ammar managed to round the bases and score from the error by the second baseman to tie the game.

The tied game held until bottom of the fourth when the Toppers picked up four base hits (two singles and two doubles) to increase the lead to 7-3.

The Cardinals final run of the game came on a to little, to late solo home run from Joe San Fellipo to make finals score 4-8.

The Cardinals return to the field Sunday at noon to make up the rained out game from Saturday before completing the series with a double header.
