Box Score 2 WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit baseball squad split today's Mountain East Conference double header with the Notre Dame College Falcons, dropping game one 7-5 in extra innings, but getting in the groove with the bats to win game two 10-4.
The Cardinals went 1-3 over the weekend series with the Falcons, and moved to 13-15 overall, and 13-11 in MEC play.
In game one, the Cardinals jumped out to a 4-2 lead through six innings and looked in control for the win. The Falcons ran in two more runs in the seventh to tie the game, then added three more in the top of the 8
th to build the 7-4 lead. The Cardinals scored one run in the bottom of the 8
th when Nick Pelegreen singled down the right field line, driving in Joe San Fellipo, but that would be it for WJU and they would take the 7-5 loss.
Ben Standiford pitched six innings for WJU before being relieved by Garret Sancomb who picked up the loss giving up four runs in under two innings on the mound.
San Fellipo led the Cards at the plate putting up four hits including a double and two stolen bases.
In the 1
st inning of game two, the Cardinals unleashed their pent-up frustrations on Falcon pitcher Zac LaRocca, driving in four runs off singles from
Tyler Kowalczyk,
Chad Ford, and
Adam Young.
Ford would score again for the Cardinals, who sealed the victory in the 5
th inning driving in four more runs to put the game out of reach for NDC.
Tony Connacher hammered a double down the right field line bringing in Young on an RBI and putting Tom Connell on third. Then Joe San Fellipo doubled to left center on a deep ball bringing in Connacher and Connell to put the Cardinals up for good, 10-4.
Ethan Weiss pitched a complete game for the Cards, allowing only four runs on 11 hits. Weiss continues to be one of the Cardinals most successful pitchers to date, with a 5-2 record thus far on the season.
Chad Ford led the Cards with three hits, coming into score once.
Patrick Ammar had a pair of hits, and scored both times he made it to base.
Tyler Kowalczyk also added a pair of hits.
The Cardinals return to the diamond on April 12
th when they host Concord University in a weekend series, the second in a two week home stand at the JB Chambers baseball complex.
