WJU Baseball Splits with Virginia-Wise

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
WISE, V.A. – The Wheeling Jesuit baseball squad's bats came to life in game one of a Mountain East Conference Double header on Saturday, leading to a big 13-9 victory. Game two was a tougher outing for the Cards however, dropping the second game 4-8.

The Cardinals now sit at 16-19 in MEC play (16-23 overall) in seventh place. With the top six teams advancing to the MEC playoffs, the Cardinals must close out a series win over the Cavaliers on Sunday, and prepare to face West Liberty next weekend, who currently sit above them in 6th place.

In game one, the Cardinals got some big production out of Tony Connacher who scored three runs on three hits, and Joe San Fellipo who hit a two-run homer to left center.

First Basemen Patrick Ammar also scored three runs off three hits, and Dillon Sunnafrank punched three hits to bring in three RBIs.

Logan Hudson picked up the win on the mound for the Cards, throwing two strikeouts against 25 batters, and allowing eight runs, five of which were earned.

The Cardinals did the bulk of their scoring in the 3rd and 4th innings, when they knocked in four and seven runs, respectively.

WJU suffered a disastrous start to game two, falling behind 6-0 in the bottom of the first inning. Pitcher Ben Standiford had a tough day on the mound, allowing seven runs in the first two innings before being relieved by Josh Kernik.

Connacher was again big at the plate for the Cards, picking up an RBI and a base hit, while Michael Adams picked up a pair of RBIs on a double to right center, driving in San Fellipo and Connacher. Ammar scored the final run of the day for the Cards when Mitch Ludewig grounded out to first base unassisted, brining Ammar in to score, and bringing the score to 4-8 where the game ended.

The Cardinals will finish out the weekend series against Wise on Sunday before taking on cross-county rivals, West Liberty next weekend in a series that could determine the final spot in the playoffs.
