Box Score 2 INDIANA, Penn. – The Wheeling Jesuit softball team earned a come from behind 6-4 victory over the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Crimson Hawks in game one of a non-conference double header on Thursday, but couldn't repeat in game two, falling 3-6 to split the series.
The split puts the Cardinals at 12-19 on the season, and they remain at 5-7 in MEC conference play heading into a five game conference road trip over the next twelve days.
"We kept putting ball in play, and did a good job of making adjustments at the plate, and I thought our pitching was good," said WJU head coach
Kelli Williams of the comeback. "We did a great job of not giving up and fighting the whole way though."
Rachel Conrad, and
Ali Smith picked up singles in the top of the 7
th inning, completing the Cardinal comeback after trailing 3-4 heading into the final inning. Conrad scored on a wild pitch to give the Cardinals the go-ahead run. Then Smith came to the plate and singled through the left side to seal the 6-4 win.
Smith also pitched a complete game for WJU, allowing only three earned runs on seven hits while picking up three strikeouts and getting the win.
In game two the Cardinals fell behind 1-0 early and couldn't recover as IUP piled on five more runs over the 3
rd, 4
th, and 6
th innings to put the game out of reach for WJU.
Skylar Berger slammed a solo shot in the 5
th inning to put the Cards back in contention, but another come back was not to be.
Erika Jusko picked up the loss, throwing four innings for WJU and allowing four earned runs on eight hits before being replaced by Smith who finished the last two innings, giving up one run.
"We made a few errors the second game, and their pitchers that kept our batters guessing," added coach Williams. "We did a good job putting ball in play, and had opportunities to score, but didn't take advantage."
WJU next travels to Notre Dame College for a MEC double header on Saturday, a team they split with at home earlier in the season.
