Cardinals Split With Urbana on the Road

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

URBANA, Ohio – The Wheeling Jesuit baseball squad split a double header with the Urbana Blue Knights on Thursday, dropping a wild game one 7-6 in extra innings, and holding off an Urbana comeback to take game two 6-5.

The split decision lifts the Cardinals into third place in the Mountain East Conference standings; just two games back from conference leader Shepherd with a 12-10 record (12-6 MEC).

Game one was a back and fourth affair, with Urbana going up 2-0 in the 2nd inning. WJU tied it up in the 4th inning when Patrick Ammar doubled down the right field line to bring in Joe San Fillipo on an RBI. Ammar then scored after a wild pitch advanced him to third, and an error from the catcher allowed him to score.

WJU then took the lead in the 5th inning when Tony Connacher singled to center field and Tyler Kowalczyk sored. Urbana  punched right back in the 5th however, scoring two runs to regain the lead, 4-3.

With one out remaining before Urbana walked away with the victory, a throwing error by the Urbana Short Stop allowed Tyler Owens to score as San Fillipo made his way to first, and the game went into an 8th inning.

WJU regained the lead in the 8th when Chad Ford took a base on a pitchers balk, bringing in Dillon Sunnafrank to score. The Cardinals got one more on the board when Kowalczyk tripled to left field bringing Ford into score, and it looked as though the Cardinals would come away with the win.

The Blue Knights weren't done however. WJU pitcher Garrett Sancomb loaded the bases, and Urbana brought in the three runs needed to win on a Paculan double to right field, giving Urbana the 7-6 win.

In game two, the Cardinals jumped out to a big 5-0 lead in the first inning from a single to left field off the bat of Mitch Ludewig that drove in Sunnafrank and Ammar. Next up was Tom Connell who doubled to right-center, brining in Chad Ford, Ludewig, and Kowalczyk for three RBIs.

Throughout the rest of the game, the Blue Knights chipped away at the Cardinal lead picking up five runs, but the comeback was not to be as Connacher scored on a Fielders choice in the 4th inning to give WJU the final lead and the 6-5 victory.

The Cardinals will now have their opportunity to make claim to the top of the MEC standings when they take on Shepherd in a pair of double headers on the road Saturday and Sunday.
