Box Score 2 WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit softball team sealed two wins against cross-town rival West Liberty on Thursday, taking game one 4-3, and closing out the double header 10-5 in game two.
The wins put some much needed space between the Cardinals and Hilltoppers in the MEC conference standings, and boost WJU's record to 10-13 overall, and 3-3 in MEC play, put them in 6
th place overall in the conference.
Game one got off to a slow start on the cool spring evening, until the third inning when West Liberty's Taylor Zeiger crushed a solo shot to left center to put the Toppers up 1-0, leading to a 2-0 inning.
The Cardinals responded right back in the bottom of the inning when
Angie Reddick drove in
Jarah Ice on an RBI single.
Marla Small put the Cardinals in the lead when she singled through the let side bringing in Reddick and
Kelsi Thompson to give WJU the 3-2 lead.
Like the first two innings, the 4
th and 5
th innings were a pitcher's dual as well, with both teams going scoreless.
West Liberty tied up the game in the top of the 6
th on a fielding error at third base by
Kelsi Thompson, allowing West Lib's Maggie Starr to pull the scores even at 3-3 heading into the final inning.
In the bottom of the 7
th, the Cardinals scored the go-ahead run when
Lorian Tharp singled to right-center brining in Thompson for a game-winning RBI.
Ali Smith picked up the win for the Cardinals, pitching a complete game from the mound and allowing only four hits.
In game two, the WJU hitters were consistent in scoring runs throughout the game adding up to a 10-5 win giving the Cardinals the sweep of their neighbors the north.
The Cardinals scored two runs in the both the 3
rd and 4
th innings, then three more runs in both the 5
th and 6
th innings leading to their 10-run total.
Doing the throwing for WJU was
Erika Jusko who picked up the win with a complete game, allowing six hits and five runs.
Springtime weather has reared its ugly head for this weekend's upcoming games for the Cardinals. WJU was supposed to play a MEC double header against West Virginia State on Saturday. Due to expected rain, that DH has been moved to Monday, starting at 12 noon.
Sunday's double header against the University of Charleston is now scheduled for a 3pm start., and due to the movement of the WVSU game, Tuesday's non-conference tussle against Ceaderville is now cancelled.
