WHEELING, W.Va. – On a bitter cold evening on Bishop Schmitt Field, The Wheeling Jesuit women's lacrosse team battled back into the win column with a decisive 13-6 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday.
 
The win puts the Cardinals back at .500 on the season at 3-3 as the GLIAC conference season approaches.
 
"That was a good team win after some tough games leading up to this one," said WJU head coach Tim Florence. "I think we came together from top to bottom. Everyone contributed and played for the cause."
 
"I think we were getting some good looks on attack, defensively we were tight and aggressive, and we were able to dictate what was going on," added coach Florence.
 
WJU sophomore Jessie Tufnell (Flower Mount, Tx.) was a machine for the Cardinals, netting five goals and two assists on just seven shots.
 
Tufnell's five goals makes her the team's second most prolific goal scorer with 14 on the season so far, just three goals behind Elizabeth Hales who added a pair of her own goals tonight as well. 
 
"She (Tufnell) was able to get a goal early and I think that gave her some confidence," said coach Florence. "They (WVWC) adjusted early to block off Elisabeth Hales, which created some opportunity for Jessie. She was a terror in transition which is where she did some damage."
 
Also getting into the score column was Olivia Krock who had two goals. Page Plesich also added a pair of goals, while Danielle Kirby and Mary Burns added singles for the Cardinals.
 
Defensively, the Cardinals swarmed the Bobcats all evening, only allowing them to fire off nine shots in total on the night. Goalie Maire Austin served all 60 minutes in the net, coming up with two saves.
 
WJU takes to the road this weekend for their final non-conference game before the GLIAC season begins in earnest. The Cardinals will face McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois.
