Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BUFFALO, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit Baseball team split a double-header with West Virginia State University on Saturday, picking up their first win of the season in the process. The Cardinals dropped a 4-14 decision in the opener, then turned on the bats to take the second game 12-5 over the Yellow Jackets.

The Cardinals, who have yet to be able to practice out side, now sit at 1-7 on the year, and 1-2 in Mountain East Conference play.

In game one, WJU jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the 2nd after Luedwing, Kowalczyk, and Connacher brought in three RBI's off of singles, and only trailed 4-5 in the 4th. The Yellowjackets rattled off five runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 10-4 and that is as far as the Cardinals would get, falling 14-4.

Four pitchers saw time at the mound for the Cardinals, with Josh Kernick giving up seven runs on eight hits in just over two innings.

In game two, WJU fell behind 3-0 in the 1st inning before lighting up the top of the 4th for nine runs en route to the team's first win of the season.

The Cards scored off singles from Nick Pelegreen, Mitch Ludewig, Tony Connacher, and Dillon Sunnafrank, with doubles added from Patrick Ammar and Tyler Kowalczyk.

Sophomore Ethan Weiss was another bright spot for the Cardinals, picking up a win by throwing a complete game and only allowing five runs.

"It felt good to finally get our bats going and score some runs," said WJU head coach Terry Edwards about the win. "We're a freshman heavy team, and we've barely been outside this season. We're challenging them to get better with every game, and keep building a strong program."

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday with a MEC double-header against Glenville State.
