SALEM, Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit softball team dropped two games on day two of the West Virginia Wesleyan tournament, held at a neutral site in Salem, Virginia. The Cardinals went 1-1 on the first day (Friday) to put them at 1-3 overall for the tourney with their final game on Sunday to come.
"We made some defensive plays where a lack of experience showed," said WJU head coach
Kelli Williams. "Offensively, we left 10 players on base against Edinboro, which hurt us, but we're coming together. We just need to learn how to adapt to different situations."
On Day one, the Cardinals knocked off Salem International University in a big way, with a 10-1 defeat of the Tigers.
WJU rode the momentum of a 6 run 3
rd inning to victory, with
Angie Reddick hitting a double, bringing in
Rachel Conrad,
Jarah Ice, and
Kelsi Thompson to go up 3-0. Two batters later,
Skylar Berger drove a double down the line bringing in Reddick,
Erika Jusko, and
Lorian Tharp for three more RBIs.
In game two on Friday, WJU fell 3-1 to the Fighting Scots of Edinboro. The Cardinals got on the board first in the 2
nd inning when Mo Stohlman singled, brining in Berger for WJU's only run of the game.
Early on Saturday morning, the Cardinals got off to a slow start, dropping their first game of Day two 6-1 to the Shippensburg Raiders. Scoring for the Cardinals was Mo Stohlman off a
Kelsi Thompson drive to shortstop in the bottom of the 5
th to make it 2-1. The Raiders then pumped in four runs in the top of the 6
th to put WJU away.
The Cardinals had an opportunity go missing to pick up their second win of the weekend, falling to Mercyhurst 7-6 on an RBI single in the bottom of the 7
th.
The Cardinals trailed Mercyhurst for most of the game, but knocked in four runs in the top of the 7
th to tie the game at six headed into the bottom of the inning before the RBI Single won the game for the Lakers.
WJU takes the field again tomorrow morning at 9am against Gannon in their final game of the tournament.
