Cardinal Women Battle Back in Big Road Win

Box Score

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team rebounded from a three-point halftime deficit to nab a 64-54 win over Concord on Saturday to claim their second road win.

The victory puts the Cardinals above .500 (11-10, 8-9 MEC) for the first time this season since winning their season opener, and gives a boost of momentum to the WJU camp heading into a big conference home matchup against Fairmont State.

"I thought we really played well against a bigger more physical team," said WJU head coach Debbie Buff. "We're fighting for a playoff home seed, so the girls knew the importance of the game, and I was very proud of the fight they showed."

The Cardinals out-rebounded the larger Mountain Lions by a 49-34 margin, leading to 10 second chance points for WJU, and 28 points in the paint.

Leading WJU was Breanna Butler, the Mountain East's #2 three-point shooter who put in 14 points on 3-7 shooting from the field, and just 2-5 from behind the arc. Butler has 57 threes so far this season, just one behind the conference leader. WJU's Jaila Bryant was close behind Butler with 13 points in just 19 minutes.

The Cardinal bench was a big contributor, with Jaana Motton scoring nine, Emily Robinson putting in seven, and Alex Anderson netting four to reach a combined 20 points for the reserves.

WJU actually led in the first half by as many as nine with 9:05 left in the period until Concord got hot behind the arc, hitting clutch three pointers that including one by CU's Melia Smith that put the Mountain Lions up by three with :37 left.

Butler then took control in the second half. After going 0-3 in the first half, Butler put in all 14 of her team high points in the second period, including a three-pointer with 3:54 left in the game that put the Cards up by four, and give them the lead for good, leading to the 10-point victory.

The Cardinals will continue their push to the playoffs at home on Thursday when they take on Fairmont State in the McDonough Center. That game is set to tip at 5:30, and will be the team's "Think Pink" evening.

Wheeling Jesuit will also honor their 94 student athletes who earned Dean's List Honors before the game, and at halftime of the men's game against Fairmont.
