Cardinals Nab Upset Road Win Over #2 Charleston

Box Score Cardinals Nab Upset Road Win Over #2 Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A whole team effort from the Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball squad gave the Cardinals an upset 88-80 victory over the Mountain East's #2 team, the Charleston Golden Eagles.

In the process, WJU senior Andre Harris had 14 points to surpass the 1000 career point mark.

The Cardinals have now won four in a row after dropping five straight, and are primed to make a run up the conference ladder with a 10-8 (8-7) record, only one game behind WV Wesleyan in the standings in 7th place.

"This was a very big win for us. To go on the road and play the way we did was satisfying," said WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "Taking four wins in a row says a lot about our guys and their ability to bounce back from loss. They have practiced hard to get back in the win column."

The Cardinals were able to move the ball and find the open men close to the basket on Monday night, shooting a solid 57% from the field, with 26 assists on 31 field goals.

Leading the Cards for the second game in a row was sophomore Justin Fritts who had 19 points, six assists, and five rebounds going 5-8 from the field and 4-7 from long range.

Fritts hit the big shots when it was needed for WJU. With the game tied at 47 early in the second half, Fritts got hot and put in the next five points for the Cards, and the visitors never looked back.

Also chipping in for the Cardinals was Eric Siefert, who was just an assist away from his second straight double-double with 14 points and nine dishes. Newly christened 1,000 point club member Harris had his 14, along with freshman Kyle Ritz who checked in for 14 points and a team-high 7 rebounds.

WJU takes to the road again on Thursday when they make the trek to the University of Virginia-Wise to take on the Cavaliers. Tipoff is set for 7:30.
