Charleston Women Shut Down Cardinals

Box Score

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team missed a chance to extend their winning streak to three on Monday night in Charleston, dropping a Mountain East Conference game to the University of Charleston 81-64.

The Cardinals remain in 7th place in the MEC with a 9-10 (6-9) record.

"Charleston played well tonight, and we didn't do the things we needed to win the game," said WJU head coach Debbie Buff. "Their point guard hurt us with dribble penetration. We will bounce back and continue to move forward."

WJU shot 43% from the field and were led by Jaila Bryant who had 19 points and six assists on the evening. Also chipping in for the Cardinals was Senior Taneka Lewis with 12, and Breanna Butler with 11.

The Cardinals couldn't contain the offensive capabilities of Charleston's Chyress Lockhart however, who had a huge night with 25 points to lead all scorers.

Defensively, the Cardinals were able to get their hands on the ball, scoring 24 points off Charleston's turnovers, but it wasn't enough to stop the Golden Eagles.

The Cardinals will next make the 5 ½ hour trip down Interstate 77 to face the Cavaliers of U. VA. Wise on Thursday, February 6th at 5:30pm.
