Buffalo, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit baseball team dropped a pair of Mountain East Conference games to West Virginia State on Friday, 2-3 in the first game, and 3-6 in the second.
The two losses keep the Cardinals winless so far in this season, where WJU hasn't even had the pleasure of practicing outside due to the cold weather.
In the first of two games, WJU took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 5
th inning after a
Dillon Sunnafrank drove in
Tyler Kowalczyk for an RBI to tie it at one and load the bases. WJU then took the lead with the next batter when catcher
Thomas Connell was walked bringing
Tony Connacher in to score, but the Cardinals would leave the bases juiced to end the inning. That would be the end of production with the bats for WJU, with the Cardinals giving up a run in the bottom of the 6
th and 7
th to drop the 7 inning shortened game.
In game two, the got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1
st on a Sunnifrank sacrifice fly, but WVSU scored two of their own to pull ahead 2-1 after the 1
st.
Sunnafrank got to work again in the top of the 3
rd, pushing a double down the left field line to bring in Connacher and Kowalczyk to put the Cardinals up 3-2, but it wasn't enough to keep the Yellow jackets at bay, dropping the game 6-3.
The Cardinals return to the mound on Saturday for the second double header of the series against West Virginia State.
