Cardinal Women Win Big Over Rams

Box Score

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's hoops squad bounced back with a vengeance from their home loss to Fairmont State on Thursday with a dominant 90-63 victory over the Shepherd Rams, at Shepherd on Saturday.

Four different players scored in double figures for the Cardinals. Jaila Bryant led all scorers with 18, followed closely by Breanna Butler who put in 17, Taneka Lewis with 14, and Jaana Motton had 13 points coming off the bench.

With the big Mountain East Conference win, the Cardinals bump back over .500 on the season at 12-11 overall, and are now at .500 in the MEC (9-9). WJU remains in 8th place in the MEC. If they can hold on to that position, they will earn the right to host a home game in the first round of the conference tournament.

"I think we played a good, fun game today," said WJU head coach Debbie Buff. "We played solid defense holding a team that is averaging 76 per game to only 60, and forcing so many turnovers. Everybody contributed, and everybody played unselfishly."

The Cardinal defense was indeed solid, scoring over 1/3rd of their points (39) off of the 30 turnovers they forced from Shepherd.

It was one-way traffic in favor of the Cardinals from the get go, with the Cardinals jumping out to a quick 14-2 lead off two big threes from Butler. WJU led by as many as many as 24 before the break, scoring 20 points in the paint. The Cardinals didn't trail for the entirety of the game.

WJU shot a solid 54% from the field, and had a balanced attack from the whole lineup with 33 points coming from the bench.

The Cardinals will take a much-needed wave of momentum home with them as they prepare to square off against the nation's 10th ranked team in conference foe Glenville State on Thursday February 20th
