Lewis Leads Cardinals To Another Upset Win

Box Score WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's hoops squad notched their second win in a row over one of the top five teams in the Mountain East Conference on Saturday, with a 75-64 demolition of the #3 West Virginia State Yellow Jackets.

The Cardinals move back to .500 on the season sitting at 9-9 (6-8 MEC) heading into a three game road trip.

Leading the Cardinals on Senior Day was, appropriately enough, senior Taneka Lewis who totaled 19 points and seven assists. Taylor Lubinsky added 13 of her own and had six boards on the night, and Breanna Butler and Jaila Bryant accounted for 10 points apiece.

WJU went on a 15-0 run in the middle of the first half to put distance between them and the Yellow Jackets, after both teams went shot-for-shot in the opening five minutes. It was a lead the Cardinals wouldn't look back from.

With about five minutes left in the first period, the Cardinals were shooting 63% from the floor to tie the mark they set on Thursday for the highest percentage by any MEC team this year. WJU finished the game shooting 50% going 29-58 from the floor.

In the second half, the Cards went on another scoring spree led by Lewis who hit a big three, and took a steal coast-to-coast to put WJU up by 13 and solidify the win.

Defensively, the Cardinals were strong, holding the Mountain East's #1 scorer, WVSU's Lexy Carson, to just 14 points on 5-15 shooting. Carson has averaged 22 per game so far this season for the Jackets.

"We were very balanced tonight, and played with a lot of energy," said WJU head coach Debbie Buff. " We did a good job of taking care of the ball with only nine turnovers. I think we're playing good team basketball at this point in the season, just have to keep taking it one game at a time."

The Cardinals have now concluded their six-game home stand, coming out 4-2 and taking a two game win streak into Charleston on Monday where they face UC at 5:30 PM.
