Box Score Wheeling, W.Va. – On a beautiful fall day, the Wheeling Jesuit University Men's Soccer team took the field against MEC Conference opponent Notre Dame College Falcons. As the game got under way, the Falcons dominated possession creating several corner kicks. However, none of those corner kicks challenged senior goalkeeper
Cody Thompson.
In the 25
th minute, the Falcons struck a shot from the corner of the 18 yard box that hit the far post and a Cardinal defender cleared the ball out for a corner. The game opened up after that opportunity and WJU began to attack more frequently.
With 15 minutes left to play in the half, senior midfielder
Luke Roan got a great look from the top of the 18 yard box, but was stymied by the Notre Dame goalkeeper. In the 43
rd minute, Notre Dame broke the dead lock with a tidy first touch and finish by Ryan Ware. The game went into half with the Cardinals down 1-0.
As the game moved into the second half, the play opened end to end. Both teams got several chances, but none that were dangerous enough to change the score. In the 89
th minute, on a free kick, senior midfielder
Luke Roan whipped a free kick from the left side of the goal to the back post beating the Falcons goalkeeper. The game went into overtime with the score tied 1-1.
Overtime came and went, with not much excitement as both teams seemed to lose energy every minute that went by. The game ended after two 10-minute overtime periods by a final score of 1-1.
The Wheeling Jesuit University Men's Soccer team next takes the field on Wednesday as they travel to Shepherd University on Wednesday October 15th for another MEC conference match up. Kick-off time is 12:00pm.
