The Wheeling University Men's Soccer Team continue the run in to the MEC Championship Tournament this weekend, as they meet Frostburg State on the road. The Cardinals are coming off a hard fought 3-1 loss to Davis and Elkins this past Wednesday, where Davide Massa grabbed his second goal of the season through a free kick.
Sundays game is a huge one for the Cardinals, with them sitting fifth currently in the MEC North. Frostburg sit in second in the North, with 15 points compared to the Cardinal's nine. A win this weekend would put Wheeling firmly in the hunt for a tournament spot in what is a very highly contested north division with a lot of quality.
Frostburg State have not lost a game since September 20th, with their last five games concluding in three wins and two ties for the Bobcats. Against Frostburg, Wheeling have only prevailed three times in 14 games, with their away record sitting at 1-6. The Cardinals last got the better of Frostburg away from home at the start of the 2022 season, and will be looking for more of the same tomorrow as a win is paramount to their MEC tournament hopes.
Redshirt Junior Jon-Michael Gordon will be key for the Cardinals going forward Sunday in getting a result from Frostburg. The Canadian has five goals and one assist so far this season, and will need to use his fine finishing tomorrow against one of the top defences in the MEC. Senior Reilly Nickles has been a standout in midfield for the Cardinals this season, and will be big for Wheeling in keeping strong possession tomorrow. Nickles has two goals and one assist of his own this season, and Jack Shearer will need him to be a big presence in the midfield tomorrow to come away from the game with three points.
The Wheeling University Men's Soccer Team kick off from Frostburg tomorrow at 5:30 PM.
