WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team pulled of one of the biggest upsets this year in the Mountain East Conference at home on Thursday night, knocking off the second-ranked Urbana Blue Knights 92-67.
Coach
Debbie Buff's Cardinals snap their two game slide, and improve to 8-9 overall, 5-8 in the MEC. The Blue Knights fall to 12-4 on the season, and 9-3 in the MEC.
The Cardinals shot a blazing 63% from the field, (the most of any team in the MEC so far this season), and an dead-eye 75% on three-pointers, going 6-8 from behind the arc. WJU's final tally of 92 points tied their season high, a mark they set in a winning effort against Shepherd just two weeks ago.
It wasn't one big scorer for the Cardinals either, but five players who scored in double figures. Leading the team was reserve
Kylie Frizell going 8-12 from the field and putting in 19 points. Following closely behind was
Breanna Butler who was 7-10 for 17, and
Taylor Lubinsky who was 5-6, totaling 15 points.
Jaila Bryant and
Lydia Hyburg were both big for the Cardinals as well, with 14 points each.
Not only could they shoot, they were collecting the boards too. WJU outrebounded Urbana 42-16 on the night. The Blue Knight's 16 rebounds were the fewest by any Mountain East team all season.
"I thought we had just an outstanding collective team effort tonight to beat the conference's second place team," said head coach Buff. "I thought it was the best we've rebounded all season, and we shot the ball extremely well. I'm very proud of our overall team effort and performance."
The Cardinals were hot from start to finish in this game, and just when Urbana would climb their way back, big shots by Butler company would push them right back down again.
WJU took a 42-38 lead at the break, and Urbana pulled within two early in the second half before the Cardinals went on a 13-0 run highlighted by a big three-pointer from Frizzell put the home team out in front for good.
The Cardinals will celebrate senior day on Saturday when West Virginia State comes calling to the McDonough Center. WJU will be pining for another upset of the third ranked Lady Yellow Jackets.
