WHEELING, W.Va. - The Wheeling Jesuit Swim team swam away with 10 individual and two team relay first places today against the highly touted Fairmont State Falcons on Saturday to win the first meet held at Jesuit since early November.
The Cardinal men came away with 137 – 123 victory, while the women were dominant with a 116 – 84 win.
"Both the guys and girls did amazing today," said Wheeling Jesuit head coach
Mike Meyers. "I'm especially proud of the men's 200 fly team (
Evan Walker,
Eric Pietz, and
Chris Munster), they were up against some great swimmers and came out on top."
Among the top performers for WJU was Cardinal freshmen
Anna Davis (Charleston, W.Va.) who earned two victories of her own with a time of 25:47 in the 50 freestyle and a 54.90 in the 100 freestyle.
The Cards won both the men's and women's 100 yard backstroke relays. The women were led by freshmen
Danielle Pekular (Pittsburgh, Pa.) who received a time of 1:01.55 while the three time Appalachian Swimming Conference's swimmer of the week, sophomore
Jakub Skrzypczak (Mielec, Poland) earned a time of 54.98.
It wasn't smooth sailing for WJU the whole way however, when Pasko Komadina of Fairmont State University set a new Wheeling Jesuit pool record in the men's 200 backstroke with a time of 1:50.49.
The Cardinals will return to their home pool again on January 24
th when they will face off against Urbana University in a meet that was rescheduled from the fall.
