Second Half Surge Sees Cardinals Past Bobcats

Box Score WHEELING, W.Va. – It was a tale of two halves for the Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team in a Mountain East Conference tussle on Monday, falling behind 33-28 at the half before storming out to a 70-54 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan.

With the win, the Cardinals move closer to .500 at 6-7 overall and 3-5 in conference. The friendly confines of the Alma Grace McDonough center continues to be a happy hunting ground for the Cardinals as well, with a 4-1 record at home on the season thus far.

The Cardinals shot just 33% from the floor in the first half, missing several jumpers from short range. Team leaders like Breanna Butler was just 2-9 and Janna Motton 1-7 from the floor. The Bobcats managed to shoot 55% from the floor, but still only managed a five-point lead headed to the break.

"At halftime I said we're not playing energetic and we're not playing defense," said WJU head coach Debbie Buff. "We talked about getting the ball down low for more high percentage shots, and switching to a man to man defense to get some more energy… and I thought that was the best defense I've seen us play all year."

Following Coach Buff's halftime talk, the Cardinals came out looking a different team, shooting 51% from the floor and 60% from behind the 3-point arc. Defensively, WJU hit the boards hard, outrebounding the taller, more physical Bobcats 43-25, and containing them to just 21 points in the second stanza.

Butler found her hot streak and ended with a team high 17 points and three assists, while Emily Robinson added 10 more. Freshman Lydia Hyburg had another big night for the Cardinals, coming off the bench for 10 points in 13 minutes to follow up on her 18-point performance against Glenville State on Saturday.

Wheeling Jesuit will now turn their attention toward MEC foe Shepherd University who sit just below them on the Conference table.
