Pioneer Defense Shuts Down Cardinal Women

Box Score GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The ladies of Wheeling Jesuit took on the nation's 12th ranked team Glenville State on Saturday, hanging tough with the Pioneers in a 97-85 loss. The Cardinals out-shot the Pioneers 45.9% to 44.8%, but 23 turnovers from WJU directly resulted in 31 points, and the win for Glenville.

The Cardinals second straight loss puts them at 5-7 on the season and 2-5 in MEC nearing the midway point in the season.

"I though we really fought hard tonight," said WJU head coach Debbie Buff. "They are the 12th place team in the country for a reason, and I think we played well against them. We missed some real easy shots and had too many turnovers in the first half, but took care of the ball in the second half and looked strong."

Leading for WJU was freshman forward Lydia Hyburg (Delaware, Ohio) who had a breakout game for the Cards, coming off the bench to score 18 points in just 13 minutes of play, going 7-10 from the field.

Jaila Bryant had another solid outing for WJU, putting in 17 points, going 6-16 from the floor, and a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line. Close behind with 16 points was Breanna Butler who also went 6-16 from the floor and 4-8 from behind the 3-point line. Alex Anderson added 11 more for the Cardinals.

Despite a good shooting performance by WJU, the big difference maker for the Cards were 17 first-half turnovers leading to 22 points for Glenville State, who went into the break with a 53-32 lead.

In the second half, the Cardinals outscored the Pioneers 53-44, but it was too little, too late.

The Cardinals return home on Monday when they will square off against West Virginia Wesleyan in the first of a six game home stand.
