Cardinal Volleyball Grinds Out Two Home Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WHEELING W.Va.-- Wheeling Jesuit University Woman's Volleyball hosted a double header against crosstown rival West Liberty University and visiting Pitt-Johnstown   Tuesday night at WJU's McDonough Center, going 2-0 on the evening.

The Cardinals cruised to victory over the Hilltoppers in straight sets, but were forced to work for the win over a strong Pitt-Johnstown, fighting-out a 3-2 victory.

In the first match, the Cards put an early lead on the Hilltoppers but both teams stepped-up their defense as the game progressed. However, West Liberty couldn't catch a break from the pounding Cardinal attack, and WJU finished the set with the 25-7 win.

That same WJU attack was relentless, leading to a sweep of the next two sets 25-14 and 25-8, giving the Cardinals the 3-0 victory.

Leading WJU with 12 kills and an impressive .733 attack percentage was Jenna Pew, the senior Middle Blocker from Marshallville, Ohio. Also standing out for the Cardinals was Corrin Early, the junior out of Medina, Ohio who had 8 kills but was also solid defensively with 7 digs.

In the second match of the night, the Mountain Cats from Pitt-Johnstown came into the McDonough center and did everything they could to carve out a win against the home-side Cardinals.

Wheeling Jesuit started off strong, winning the first set 25-20, but the Lady Cats didn't back down, taking the next two sets, but needing extra points to do so, 27-25, and 29-27. The loss in the second set was the first set loss for the Cardinals in the last 21 sets, having beaten their last 6 opponents 3-0 each.

WJU relied on a barrage of kills from a duo of freshman young guns, Emma Schleucher and Kayce Kruki, to put the game away in the next 2 sets. Schleucher had 19 kills on the night, and Kruki followed close behind with 17. Kruki was also strong on both sides of the net, totaling 14 digs. Jenna Pew, however, was again the star for the Cards, tallying up a triple-double against the Mountain Cats with 14 kills, 35 assists, and 13 digs.

Though each set was a nail-biter, WJU pulled away with the last two sets 25-23 and 15-10.

The Cardinals, now 12-3 on the year, take to the road for an upcoming pair of MEC conference games against West Virginia State University, and the University of Charleston on the 27th and 28th before visiting the Cal PA Vulcans on October 2nd. WJU then returns home to the friendly confines of the McDonough Center for a conference match against Virginia-Wise .
