Wheeling Jesuit Men’s & Women’s Soccer Split At Urbana

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 URBANA, Ohio - The Cardinal Soccer teams left Urbana with mixed results on Wednesday night. The WJU Men pushed the Blue Knights to overtime, but came away on the wrong end of the 0-1 score line. The Cardinal Women however rode the momentum of a 2-0 halftime lead to take a 3-0 road victory.
 
For the Women, the victory marked their first win in the new Mountain East Conference.
 
The WJU Women's team started the scoring 14 minutes into the game when a free kick bounced off the cross bar and #10 Aubrey Hutchinson rebounded and put the ball into a wide open goal to make the score 1-0.
 
Hutchinson was the Cardinals main attacking threat on the day, taking a total of five shots and tallying an assist as well.
 
Little more than 10 minutes later, Jenna Kelemkowsky drilled home a penalty kick and the score moved to 2-0 in favor of WJU after the 26th minute.
 
Following the halftime break, #8 Allison Geary received an assist from Hutchinson to put the match away for the Cardinals with a 3-0 lead.
 
The WJU Men had a harder time finding their way past the Urbana defense, but held a strong defensive line of their own to force the game to overtime.
 
Urbana held a distinctive 19-11 total shots advantage, and forced WJU Goalkeeper Mathew McCormick into 9 saves on the day.
 
The last attempt at a save turned out to be the most important however when the Blue Knights #16 Ben Fitzpatrick streaked passed two WJU defenders and crossed to a sliding #14 Michael McFarlane for the game winning goal in Overtime.
 
Both the WJU Men and Women will take to the road together again when they face Shepard University on Saturday, September 21st
