Box Score 2 WHEELING, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit baseball team continued WVIAC play on Tuesday afternoon, playing host to the University of Charleston. The Cardinals dropped the opener 9-7 as the Golden Eagles came-from-behind to win. WJU bounced back with the game two win by a score of 4-1.
In game one,
Jordan Kraus started the WJU offense after
Josh Kernik, Jesuit pitcher retired the first three batters. Jesuit used a series of hit-and-runs to plate the first run.
Cory Wickham successfully advance Kraus to second, and
Patrick Ammar followed with a RBI single to centerfield. At the end of the first inning Jesuit led 1-0.
Jesuit rallied with two outs in the second inning which was sparked by a round tripper from Kraus. Wickham followed with a single to right field and Ammar was hit by a pitch. With two runners on,
Robbie Davia singled to right for a RBI. The Cardinals left two on base while establishing a 3-0 advantage.
Charleston answered with four runs in the third inning as Anthony Brunetti recoded a two-out double for the Golden Eagles first hit. Ryan Foster followed with a RBI single, and after a walk, UC delivered a single and triple for three runs and a 4-3 advantage. In the bottom half of the inning, Kraus lifted the Cardinals to a two-run advantage, blasting his second homerun of the game with two runners on base –
Mike Garman was hit by a pitch and
Tyler Kowalczyk singled to setup Kraus' three-run bomb. At the end of three, Jesuit led 6-4.
The scoring was silent in the fourth inning; however in the fifth, UC put two runs on the scoreboard with a two-out rally. Jesuit responded with a run to reestablish a 7-6 advantage on a UC throwing error.
WJU relief pitcher, Cullen Hiderliter kept the Golden Eagles' offense silent in the sixth, and Jesuit went down 1-2-3. In the seventh inning, UC rallied for a two-run advantage on three singles and two walks, 9-7. Jesuit put two runners on the bases in the final inning, but couldn't plate a run as Kraus walked and Wickham singled.
Hinderliter received the tough loss, allowing three runs, two earned with no walks. Kraus led the offense with a 4-for-4 effort which included two homeruns, two singles, a walk and four RBI.
In game two, Jesuit, again, started the scoring. Wickham delivered a single to centerfield, and Tim Geibel walked. With two outs, Davia blasted single through the middle of the field to score Wickham and give Jesuit an early 1-0 advantage.
Cardinals' pitcher,
Ethan Weiss, kept the Golden Eagles' offense silent until the fifth inning when UC manufactured a run with a single and two deep fly balls to the outfield for a 1-1 stalemate.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Jesuit's offense exploded for three runs on three singles and two hit by pitches. Geibel earned one of the free passes while Davia and Hull singled. Hull recorded a RBI after Geibel and Davia moved to third and second on a failed pick-off attempt. Kowalczyk received the second free pass, and pinch hitter
Michael Adams sent a RBI single into right field. With the bases loaded, Kraus plated a run with a sacrifice fly out to centerfield.
WJU closer,
Justin Fritts, recorded the final two outs to secure the 4-1 victory and a save. Weiss earned the win with 6.1 innings pitched, allowing three hits, one run, two walks and five strikeouts.
Wheeling Jesuit will be back in action on Sunday, April 14 on the road against Point Park University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
