Box Score BANNER ELK, N.C.---The Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse finished a 2-0 weekend in North Carolina by defeating Less-McRae College by a score of 15-3. With the win, WJU improved to 8-5 overall while handing the Bobcats their 13
th loss of the season.
The Wheeling Jesuit started the scoring 30 seconds into the game when
Matt Devries rattled the cage with an unassisted goal. At 10:39,
Bryce Brochu followed with a goal for a 2-0 lead, and
Connor Summers was credited with the assist. Seven seconds later, Lees-McRae got onto the scoreboard to cut the Cardinals' lead in half. Jesuit responded with seven unanswered goals which lasted deep into the second period. With 10:20 remaining in the first period,
Brian Frank ignited the Cardinals' offensive outburst with an unassisted goal.
Jared Sims, Summers and
Rob Mills followed with unassisted attacks for points while
Duston Doudelet kept the run alive after receiving a pass from Brochu. Devries notched his second goal of the game, and at the 4:21 mark of the second half, Sims recorded the seventh goal of the run. The Bobcats scored the final goal of the half with 1:52 showing on the clock, and Jesuit held a 9-2 halftime advantage.
The Bobcats opened the second half with a goal, but Jesuit controlled the pace of play after the break, scoring six goals before time expired. The Cardinals scored twice in the third period as
Tyler Buchan and Summers touched the back of the net, and Frank and Brochu added assists, respectively. In the final period,
Landon DelPrince found
Danny Bichsel for a goal, and Mills followed with another goal on a pass from Sims. DelPrince and
Josh McQuaide rounded out the Cardinals' scoring with unassisted goals.
Jim LaPenna earned the win between the pipes, allowing one goal and collecting two saves in 15 minutes of work.
Joe Amsler was in relief for 40:46 with four saves and two goals against.
Kevin Figaniak finished the final 4:14 of the game with one save.
The Cardinals held a 46-31 advantage in ground balls as
Evan Hodel led Jesuit with six pick-ups.
Aaron Gofreed secured four ground balls, and
Nick Messner,
Zach Crabtree,
Josh Lambert and Doudelet had three. Defensively, Crabtree led with four caused turnovers and Messner had three. Gofreed, Frank and
Troy Mendenhall caused two.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, April 13 at the James LaRosa Complex against Roberts Wesleyan College. Face-off is scheduled for 12 p.m.
