WJU Lax Secures ECAC Playoff Birth with Dominant Senior Day Performance

Box Score WHEELING, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse team finished regular season play on Saturday afternoon against Lindenwood University on Senior Day at the James LaRosa Complex. The Cardinals dominated the second period, exploding for 10 goals en route to a 16-12 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory. With the win, Jesuit secured an ECAC Playoff spot while improving to 11-5 overall and 4-3 in league play. The Lions fell to 8-5 overall and 3-4 in league play.
 
Lindenwood started the scoring at the 13:42 mark of the first period. The Lions held a 1-0 advantage for four-and-a-half minutes before Jesuit knotted the game. At 9:13, Tyler Buchan received a pass from Connor Summers and buried the shot. Buchan followed with WJU's second goal, and this time, Sean Wright was credited with the assist. Jesuit led 2-1 at the end of the first period.
 
Jesuit rattled the cage first in the second period for a 3-1 advantage as Bryce Brochu and Brian Frank teamed-up for a goal – Brochu scored and Frank had the assist. At 11:48, the Lions surged with back-to-back unassisted goals to tie the game at 3-3. Two minutes elapsed, before the stalemate was broken. At 8:50, Summers' unassisted goal lifted the Cardinals to a 4-3 advantage and ignited a nine-goal run. A minute later, Jared Baranowski followed with a goal assisted by Landon DelPrince. Jesuit continued to apply pressure as Frank found the back of the net, assisted by Kevin Figaniak. Brochu recorded his second goal of the game at 5:35 when Buchan found him on the wing. Frank assisted the next three goals as Wright fired two shots past the LWU goalie, and Summers had the third. After building a 10-3 advantage and 1:12 left to play in the half, Figaniak connected from long distance, and with 2-seconds remaining, Baranowski buried a solo attempt. Jesuit led 12-3 at the break.
 
 The Lions came out of the locker room on fire, opening the third period with four goals, 12-7. Ed Monahan ended Lindenwood's scoring outburst when he picked up a ground ball off the face-off and went directly to the net. The two teams traded scores for the rest of the period as Wright scored two goals for Jesuit. The Lions added three more goals in the final frame, however, DelPrince rounded out the scoring on a pass from Aaron Gutentag to give the Cardinals a 16-12 advantage.
 
The Cardinals' offense was led by Wright and Frank with five points apiece. Wright notched four goals and an assist while Frank had four assists and one goal. Buchan, Summers, DelPrince and Figaniak chipped in three points each. Buchan and Summers recorded two goals and an assist while DelPrince and Figaniak tallied two assists and one goal. Baranowski and Brochu had two goals, Monahan recorded one and Gutentag added an assist.
 
Corey Luebbe led Jesuit's defensive efforts with five caused turnovers and three ground balls. Matt Maccario followed with three caused turnovers and picked up a team-high six ground balls. Evan Hodel secured a second-best five ground balls with a 7-out-of-16 performance at the face-off X while senior Josh Lambert was 6-for-15 in face-offs.
 
WJU goalie, Jim LaPenna, earned the victory, collecting 12 saves.
 
Before the game, WJU recognized six seniors in their final home stand as Josh Lambert, Matt King, Ed Monahan, Evan Johnston, Matt Maccario and Jim LaPenna played their final game at the James LaRosa Complex.
 
Wheeling Jesuit advanced to the postseason which will be held in Erie, Pa. at top-ranked Mercyhurst College. The Cardinals earned a four seed and will play the top-seeded Lakers in first round competition. The ECAC playoff game is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Friday, May 3.
