Cardinal Lacrosse Unleashes with Nine First Period Goals en Route to a 21-6 Victory Over Walsh

Box Score NORT CANTON, Ohio---The Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse team unleashed with nine first period goals en route to a 21-6 victory over Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Walsh University on Saturday afternoon. With the win, The Cardinals improved to 10-5 overall and 3-3 in the GLIAC while the Cavaliers fell to 2-7 overall and 0-6 in league play.
 
The Cardinals flew out of the gate to build a 9-0 advantage after the first period. Brian Frank started the scoring frenzy with back-to-back goals at 13:45 and 12:18, respectively. Tyler Buchan and Landon DelPrince assisted the initial scores. Connor Summers kept the run alive with an unassisted goal, and DelPrince found Duston Doudelet and Sean Wright for the Cardinals' fourth and fifth goals. Wright scored again, this time from Bryce Brochu, and Frank followed with two more goals as DelPrince assisted the second. With 4:31 remaining in the first period, Frank found Wright for the Cardinals' ninth goal.
 
Jesuit carried the momentum into the second frame as Brochu, DelPrince and Summers rattled the cage for a 13-0 WJU advantage. The Cavaliers found the back of the net twice before the half ended as Mason Axline finished two unassisted attempts. The Cardinals led 13-2 at the break.
 
In the third period, Jesuit tacked on five more goals. Aaron Gofreed initiated the scoring with an unassisted goal, and Kevin Figaniak followed with a goal which was assisted by Wright. At 7:05, Doudelet scored his second goal of the game on a Brochu pass, and in a man-up situation, Rob Mills connected with the back of the net. Matt Devries rounded out the third period scoring as Danny Bichsel led him to the net.
 
Walsh opened the final frame with a goals and Jesuit answered with two. Bichsel (assist) and Doudelet (goal) paired up for the Cardinals' 19th goal, and Jared Baranowski recorded the tossed in Cards 20th goal on a pass from Gofreed. With 4:56 remaining n the game, Evan Hodel recorded the Cardinals final goal.
 
Defensively, the Cardinals caused 12 turnovers as Corey Luebbe led with a team-high four caused turnovers. Troy Mendenhall followed with two while Wright, Mills, Brian Tran, Zach Crabtree, Ed Monahan and Brennen Tarleton each had one.
 
Hodel and Josh Lambert led the Cardinals' ground ball efforts with six apiece while the duo dominated the face-off X. Hodel was 16-for-17 in face-offs and Lambert was 9-for-14.
 
WJU goalie Jim LaPenna manned the net for the initial 15-minutes without any action. Joe Amsler relieved LaPenna of his duties in the second period and received the win. Amsler recorded six saves in 45-minutes of work.
 
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, April 27 at the James LaRosa Complex for Senior Night against Lindenwood University. Face-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
