Box Score WHEELING, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse team played its first home game at James LaRosa Complex on Saturday afternoon against the visiting Red Hawks of Roberts Wesleyan College. The Cardinals opened the game with six unanswered goals en route to a 14-5 victory. With the win, Jesuit improved to 9-5 overall while Roberts Wesleyan slipped to 3-9 overall.
The Cardinals flew to a 6-0 advantage in the first period as
Landon DelPrince started the scoring, and
Evan Johnston was credited with the assist at the 9:17 mark.
Evan Hodel buried WJU's second goal when
Sean Wright found him in front of the goal. At 6:02, DelPrince found Jared Baronowski for Jesuit's third goal, and
Sean Wright rattled the cage 18-seconds later off a pass from
Brian Frank.
DelPrince recorded a second assist in a man-up situation as
Connor Summers fired the ball off the natural turf into the net for a 5-0 Cardinal advantage.
Tyler Johnson scored the Cardinals' sixth goal from
Tyler Buchan.
With 1:55 left in the first period, Roberts Wesleyan ended the Cardinals' scoring outburst with a goal by Dom Cianfarano. The Red Hawks carried the momentum into the second period, scoring three unanswered goals. RWC did not allow Jesuit to touch the back of the net in the second period, however, Jesuit led 6-4 at halftime.
After the break, Jesuit countered the Red Hawks attack with back-to-back goals from DelPrince. Frank assisted the initial goal at 7:13, and Wright had the second assist at 6:17. Roberts Wesleyan answered with a goal before the third period ended, and Jesuit led 8-5.
The Cardinals offense exploded in the final frame, opening with five unanswered goals. Wright ignited the run with a pair of goals, assisted by
Bryce Brochu and DelPrince, respectively. Baronowski found Johnson for the third goal of the run, and Johnson followed with an assist as Wright collected his fourth goal of the game. At 8:06, Baronowski buried Jesuit's 13
th goal of the game, capping the 5-0 run for a 13-5 advantage. Cianfarano ended Jesuit's scoring attack with a goal at 4:40, but
Duston Doudelet answered 13-seconds later with the Cardinas' final goal when
Ed Monahan found Doudelet in a one-on-one situation in front of the net.
The Cardinals held a 47-37 advantage in ground balls as
Corey Luebbe picked up a team-high nine ground balls. Hodel secured six ground balls while winning 10-of-18 face-offs, and Monahan secured five GB's. Luebbe and Monahan caused six turnovers, three apiece, Johnston caused two and Johnson, Matt Maccario, and
Jared Sims had one each.
WJU goalie,
Jim LaPenna, earned the win with 56:36 between the pipes and 15 saves.
Joe Amsler manned the net for the final 3:24, collecting one save.
Wheeling Jesuit will be back in action on Saturday, April 20 in North Canton, Ohio against Walsh University. Face-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
