Box Score 2 Winter Haven, Fla.---The Wheeling Jesuit baseball team dropped a doubleheader against Northwood University on Friday evening at the RussMatt Baseball Classic. Jesuit fell by scores of 2-0 and 9-1, respectively.
In game one, the Cardinals received an outstanding pitching performance by Tony Acierno, who threw six complete innings and only allowed two runs on five hits while collecting seven strike outs. Acierno gave up four hits in the opening inning, a double and three singles, allowing two Timberwolves to plate runs. After the first, Acierno only allowed one hit while striking out six batters – three batters went down looking.
Offensively, the Cardinals scattered six hits compared to the Timberwolves five, but couldn't push any runs across the plate.
Patrick Ammar doubled in the first inning while
Corey Hull,
Patrick Biega,
Robbie Davia,
Mitch Ludewig and
Tim Giebel all followed with singles throughout the game.
In game two, Jesuit opened the first inning with a run.
Cory Wickham reached first base on four pitches and Davia followed with a RBI double to the left centerfield fence. Jesuit left two runners on base in the second inning as Giebel and
Jordan Medley both singled. The Timberwolves answered, rallying for seven runs on five hits and three Jesuit fielding errors. Northwood added a run in the third and the fourth innings and kept the Cardinals silent for the rest of the game.
Davia received the loss for the Cardinals, allowing seven runs, only two earned runs, on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Wheeling Jesuit will be back in action on Saturday, March 9 against Winona State University at 1:30 p.m.
