Missouri St. Louis Earns Sweep with a Pair of Late Inning Comebacks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla.---The Wheeling Jesuit baseball team seemed to be in the driver seat in both games of  a doubleheader against the University of Missouri St. Louis, however, the Tritons rallied late to secure two wins by scores of 7-4 and 6-5.

In game one, Missouri started the scoring in the second inning, plating one run for an early 1-0 advantage. The Cardinals retaliated with two runs on three hits and a walk. Mitch Ludewig drew a walk to lead-off the inning, and Patrick Biega moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Ludewig stole third, but unfortunately was cut down at the plate on Shuan Gutkin's ground ball to the short stop. With two outs, WJU rallied with three consecutive hits to plate two runs. Patrick Ammar sparked the rally with a single to right centerfield, and Jordan Kraus doubled to right field, plating Gutkin. Ammar scored on a single by Cory Wickham, however, Kraus was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.

The Tritons answered with a run in the third inning to tie the game, 2-2. Jesuit regained the lead in the fifth inning as Ludewig led-off with a base hit to the right side. Biega laid down a second sacrifice bunt, and Gutkn followed with a RBI triple to the right centerfield gap. Ammar followed with a sacrifice fly out to centerfield to score Gutkin.

In the sixth inning, UMSL rallied with four runs which was sparked by a solo home run by Michael Budka. The rally continued with a base hit through the left side of the infield and a sacrifice bunt. Jesuit walked the nine batter and caused the lead-off man to fly out. With two outs and runners at first and second, a base hit gave the Tritons a one run advantage, 5-4, and a double to left centerfield plated two more runs.

Kyle Rees received the loss. Gutkin, Ammar, Kraus, Wickham, Medley and Ludewig all had hits for Wheeling Jesuit. Gutkin, Ammar, Kraus and Wickham each added a RBI while Gutkin (2), Ammar and Ludewig scored runs.

In game two, Jesuit flew to a 5-0 advantage. The Cardinals scored first on a passed ball and wild pitch. In the second inning, Austin Guy blasted a single to centerfield, however, was out at second on Medey's fielder's choice. Medley moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch before the inning ended, 1-0 WJU. Jesuit added a run in the third inning as Ammar doubled centerfield and Davia's RBI single gave WJU a 2-0 advantage.

The Cardinals continued to move runners across home plate in the fifth inning. Pinch hitter, Cory Wickham, walked to lead-off the inning, and Gutkin moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Back-to-back singles by Ammar and Kraus kept the rally intact as Ammar earned an RBI to lift the Cardinals to a 3-0 advantage. With runners at second and third, Guy blasted a two-RBI single into right field, and Jesuit led 5-0.

In the sixth inning, UMSL scored six runs on one timely hit. The Cardinals walked the lead-off batter and struck out the second batter of the inning.  The next hitter drew a walk followed by two hit batsman to give UMSL their first run. A Jesuit throwing error plated two more runs and a three-run homerun by Charlie Mohr lifted the Tritons to a 6-5 advantage, and UMSL held on for the win.

Parker Lang received the loss for WJU. Ammar and Kraus each doubled and singled with a RBI while Austin Guy recorded a pair of singles and two RBI. Robbie Davia, Dylan Plocki and Adam Young added hits.
