Box Score WINTER PARK, Fla.---The Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse team recorded the first win of a four-game southern trip on Saturday afternoon in Winter Park, Fla. The Cardinals exploded for 14 second half goals en route to a 17-9 victory over Rollins College while improving to a 3-2 overall record.
Brian Frank led the Cardinals' offense with six points consisting of five goals and an assist.
Landon DelPrince followed with a four point effort on three goals and an assist while
Tyler Johnson found the back of the cage three times.
Tyler Buchan scored four points with three assists and a goal, and
Sean Wright added two goals.
Kevin Figaniak,
Bryce Brochu and
Jared Sims rounded out the scoring with one goal apiece.
Rollins established the early lead, recording the game's first goal at 11:52. Jesuit answered with a pair of goals by Buchan and Wright at 9:40 and 7:03, respectively. Frank started the second half with a goal to give the Cardinals a 3-1 advantage, however the Tars weren't finished. Rollins Rollins answered Jesuit's three-goal run with four goals to take a 5-3 halftime advantage.
The second half was all Wheeling Jesuit. The Cardinals opened the third frame with three scores. Johnson rattled the cage twice during the Cardinals scoreboard overhaul, and Frank chipped in one goal. Moments later, the Tars tied the game at 6-6, and the two teams went back-and-forth, trading goals for five minutes.
DelPrince gave the Cards a 7-6 lead and attacked the net again after a Rollins goal for a 8-7 advantage. The Tars answered with another goal before Jesuit's offense surged. With 7:35 remaining in the third period, Johnson broke an 8-8 stalemate and ignited a four-goal Cardinal run which carried over to the final period. Frank closed the third period with two goals, lifting the Cardinals an 11-8 advantage, and carried the momentum into the fourth period to establish a 12-8 lead with 12:01 left to play.
At 11:13, the Tars interrupted Jesuit's run, however, the Cardinals answered with five goals in the final 10 minutes of the game. Wright started the scoring outburst, and Sims followed while Brochu and Figaniak sent shots into the net. DelPrince netted the Cardinals final goal with 54-seconds left in the contest.
Wheeling Jesuit held a 45-34 advantage in shots and a slight 30-29 edge in ground balls.
Evan Hodel and
Corey Luebbe led the Cardinals ground ball efforts with five pick-ups apiece.
Jim LaPenna earned the victory between the pipes, collecting 13 saves.
Wheeling Jesuit will play one more game in the sunshine state before heading north. On Thursday, March 7 the Jesuit shares will line-up against Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Fla. Face-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
