Box Score 2 Winter Haven, Fla.---The Wheeling Jesuit baseball team bounced back from an 0-2 start with a doubleheader sweep of Ohio Dominican University. The Cardinals used extra innings to capture a 2-1 advantage in game one and carried the momentum into the second game for a 2-0 shutout win.
“I was proud of the way our players bounced back today, putting yesterday's poor performance behind them,” said Head Coach
Terry Edwards. “Baseball is all about solid pitching, timely hitting and sound defense – we had all of those today.”
In the first game, Wheeling Jesuit scattered seven hits around the yard.
Jordan Kraus led the Cardinal offense with a 3-for-3 performance, three singles, which included a run scored and the game winning RBI.
Tim Giebel followed with a 2-for-3 effort, blasting a double and a single with a RBI.
Patrick Ammar and
Austin Guy added singles.
Ohio Dominican started the scoring in the first inning to establish a 1-0 advantage. WJU did not allow the Panthers to touch the plate for the remainder of the contest, and ODU held the Cardinals' scoreless through the sixth. However, Kraus worked the count, earning a base on balls to lead-off the seventh inning which sparked a rally to tie the game. A wild pitch sent Kraus to second base, and Giebel's double to right centerfield plated Kraus which knotted the game at 1-1. Guy added a single; unfortunately the Cardinals left two stranded on base.
After holding the Panther's scoreless in their extra at-bat,
Jordan Medley reached on an ODU fielding error. The Cardinals followed with back-to-back base hits by Ammar and Kraus for the extra inning victory.
WJU pitcher,
Parker Lang, earned the complete game victory allowing seven hits, one earned run and four walks while collecting five strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Medley opened the game with a walk, Kraus followed with a single and
Robbie Davia hit into a fielder's choice which plated Medley, and gave WJU the early 1-0 lead. The Cardinals scored again in the fourth inning as
Cory Wickham led-off with a single, and
Austin Guy followed with a walk. Wickham was caught stealing, but
Corey Hull blasted a single to left-centerfield, plating Guy for the Cardinals' second run.
Wickham and Hull led the Cardinals with two hits apiece while Kraus, Guy and
Mitch Ludewig scattered singles.
Davia, earned a complete game shutout victory, allowing three hits and two walks while collecting two strikeouts.
“We are still struggling with our individual hitting approaches, but I am confident that the more at-bats and pitches we see our players will improve,” said Edwards. “One aspect that concerns me the most is our offensive execution during critical parts of the game. We will continue to work hard as a coaching staff and as a team to improve.”
Wheeling Jesuit will be back in action on Tuesday, March 5 against Wayne State University. First pitch of the 9-inning contest is scheduled for 10 a.m.
