Box Score ERIE, Pa.---The Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse team traveled to Erie, Pa. for an Eastern College Athletic Conference contest against the undefeated Lakers of Mercyhurst College. The Cardinals trailed by only two goals after the third period, however, the Lakers' offense exploded for six goals in the final frame for a 15-7 victory. WJU fell to 6-5 overall and 2-3 in ECAC play while the Lakers improved to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in league play.
Wheeling Jesuit opened the game with back-to-back goals from
Kevin Figaniak and
Sean Wright, establishing a 2-0 advantage by the 9:55 mark –
Landon DelPrince assisted Wright's goal. At 8:40, the Lakers found the net and followed with two more goals to capture a 3-2 lead before the first period ended.
Mercyhurst increased the lead to 4-2 in the second period, but Jesuit fired back. At 11:10,
Connor Summers found Wright for his second goal of the game. After another Laker goal, Summers rattled the cage to bring Cardinals within a goal at, 5-4.
Brian Frank was on the assist. Mercyhurst ended the half with a goal to take a 6-4 halftime advantage.
After the break, the Lakers surged for three straight goals for a 9-4 lead. Jesuit answered with three consecutive goals of their own to cut the deficit to 9-7 heading into the final period. With 6:44 remaining in the third, Summers found the back of the cage and
Tyler Johnson followed with a goal at 3:47. Frank rounded out the Cardinals' scoring when
Aaron Gofreed led him to the net.
The Lakers responded with six fourth-period goals and held Jesuit scoreless for the final 15 minutes. WJU Goalkeeper,
Jim LaPenna, recorded eight saves.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, April 6 in Mars Hill, N.C. against Mars Hill College. Face-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
