Box Score 2 GREENSBURG, Pa.---The Wheeling Jesuit baseball team received two outstanding pitching performances on Saturday against Seton Hill University. However, the Griffins (16-5, 9-2 WVIAC) managed to outlast the Cardinals (5-14, 2-6 WVIAC) in two tightly played ballgames by scores of 4-3 and 4-2, respectively.
Tony Acierno went the distance in game one and earned the tough loss. The junior from Gibsonia, Pa. had a shaky start, allowing two doubles and two hit batters in the first four plate appearances. The Griffins scored two runs during the excitement, but Acierno showed more determination. After a sacrifice bunt but SHU, Acierno struck out the sixth batter and got the seven-man to fly out to end the inning. Acierno cruised through the second, third and fourth innings, allowing no hits and two walks with one strike out.
The Cardinals threatened to score in the second inning when Tim Geibel doubled to left centerfield and
Robbie Davia singled to the same side, but the Cardinals left the lead runner at third base after a routine double play and fly out to left field. Jesuit cut the Griffin lead in half in the fourth inning as
Patrick Ammar singled to right field, and Davia drove him in with a RBI single to center.
The Cardinals rallied for two runs in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 advantage when back-to-back walk allowed Corey Wickham and
Jordan Kraus to reach base with one out. Next, Ammar reached on a fielder's choice, and Geibel followed with a two-RBI double. Seton Hill answered with two runs in the fifth and held on for the 4-3 win.
In game two,
Parker Lang got the call and threw a complete game. Lang shoved three scoreless innings before the Griffins crossed the plate. In the fourth inning, Wheeling Jesuit botched a double play which proved to be detrimental as SHU followed with a three run homerun. The Cardinals answered with two runs in the fifth inning when
Corey Hull laid down a two-out bunt, and Wickham followed with a base hit to left field. After an error that loaded the bases, Ammar blasted a single to left field, plating two runs.
Lang had another shutdown inning, but unfortunately, the Cardinals couldn't plate a run. Seton Hill added a run in the sixth.
The Cardinals will be back in action in Greensburg, Pa. on Sunday, March 24 for a 9-inning contest against Seton Hill at 1 p.m.
