Jesuit Lacrosse's Second Half Surge Secures 13-8 Victory Over Chestnut Hill College

Box Score BETHANY, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse team improved to 6-2 overall after defeating the visiting Griffins of Chestnut Hill College on Saturday afternoon at Bison Stadium. The Cardinals battled back-and-forth for the first two periods, but opened the second half with three unanswered goals en route to a 13-8 victory.
 
Brian Frank led the Cardinals' offense with six points on four assists and two goals. Landon DelPrince and Tyler Buchan followed with three goals apiece. In addition, DelPrince set a career milestone by eclipsing the career 100-point plateau with 61 goals and 41 assists. Bryce Brochu added a 3-point performance with two assists and one goal, and Connor Summers notched two goals. Sean Wright and Rob Mills rounded out the scoring with one goal each while Kevin Figaniak had two assists and Aaron Gutentag chipped in one.
 
The seesaw battle started after Jesuit recorded the first goal at 14:44 when Frank found Wright for the opener. A minute later, Chestnut Hill responded with an unassisted goal, and the two teams battled for 11 scoreless minutes. At 2:21, the Cardinals scored extra-man situation and Brochu rattled the cage and Frank was on the assist, however, the Griffins found the back of the net twice in the final 1:50 for a 3-2 advantage.
 
Jesuit evened the game at 10:52 in the second half and regained the lead seven minutes after. DelPrince recorded his 100th career point while tying the game at 3-3. Frank recorded his third assist of the game as Summers buried the go-ahead goal, 4-3. With 2:48 remaining the game was tied again as Chestnut Hill recorded their fourth goal. The Griffin lead only lasted one minute as Jesuit carried a 5-4 advantage into halftime when Frank found Buchan for the Cardinals fifth goal.
 
The Cardinals carried the momentum into the second half as WJU did not allow the Griffins to score while adding a four-goal cushion. DelPrince started the Cardinals three-goal run with an unassisted midair turnaround shot. Frank followed with a goal with no help, and Brochu found Summers for a goal with 32-seconds left in the third period.
 
The fourth period followed the first half protocol as Chest Nut hill started the scoring at 13:54. Jesuit responded, taking the lead back to four goals at 10-6 when Figaniak found DelPrince for his third goal. The Griffins scored again, however the Cardinals immediately responded as Gutentag picked up the face-off ground ball and fired the ball to Frank who finished the play. Buchan recorded Jesuit's 12th goal, and after a Griffin goal, Mills finished the scoring with 34-seconds left in the game.
 
The final stat sheet was relatively even as Jesuit attempted 36 shots compared to the Griffins' 31 shots. The Cardinals held a slight 36-34 edge on the ground while Josh Lambert secured a team-high eight ground balls. Lambert added an 11-for-18 performance at the face-off X, and Ed Monahan led with three caused turnovers.
 
Jim LaPenna earned his fifth win of the season between the pipes, 5-2, while collecting 14 saves.
 
Wheeling Jesuit will be back in action on Wednesday, March 20 against Lake Erie College at Bison Stadium. Face-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
