Jesuit Baseball Falls to Shepherd

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Toronto, Ohio---The Wheeling Jesuit baseball team opened home play against Shepherd University at Toronto High School in Toronto, Ohio. The Cardinals dropped two close games by scores of 5-4 and 3-1.

In game one, Shepherd started the scoring in the third inning, plating three runs on two singles, a double and a walk. The Cardinals answered with a run in the fourth inning when Corey Hull led off with a single and scored. Patrick Ammar followed with the RBI single. Jesuit added another run in the fifth after the Rams took a 5-1 lead. WJU's Robbie Davia blasted a solo-homerun to cut the deficit to 5-2, and Jesuit plated their third run in the sixth inning by the same tandem that generated WJU's first run. Hull led-off the inning with a single and Ammar followed with an RBI single. Jesuit made things interesting in the seventh inning as pinch hitter, Chad Ford, singled to start off the final frame. Davia followed with a double, placing runners at first and third. Medley grounded out to the shortstop for a RBI, but the Cardinals left the tying run at third base.

WJU pitcher, Tony Acierno, received the loss, allowing only four hits in four innings of work with four walks and seven strikeouts.

Game two was an old-fashioned pitching dual. WJU's Jordan Kraus had the ball and did not allow the Rams to plate a run until the fourth inning. Kraus allowed on hit in the first inning, two in the third inning and two in the fourth. The Rams plated the game's first run in the fourth after back-to-back hits which included a single then a double. Jesuit responded with a run in the fifth inning, tying the game at one apiece. Mitch Ludewig led-off with a double and moved to third on Patrick Biega's sacrifice bunt. Hull followed with a deep fly ball to centerfield for the RBI. Kraus kept the Rams scoreless through seven innings, but Jesuit didn't score a run in the bottom of the seventh and the game needed extra innings.

The Rams opened the eight inning with a single and a double. With runners at second and third and one out, the Rams took a 3-1 lead after a single plated both runs. Mike Garman singled to centerfield in the final inning for the Cardinals, but couldn't find the plate. Garrett Sancomb received the loss for WJU.

Wheeling Jesuit will be back in action on Wednesday, March 20 in Buckhannon, W.Va. against conference foe West Virginia Wesleyan College. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
