Jesuit Baseball Drops a Doubleheader to Concord University

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WHEELING, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit baseball team traveled to Athens, W.Va. for a doubleheader against Concord University. The Cardinals flew to a 5-1 advantage in game one, but the Mountain Lions came back to capture the opener 12-7 and carried the momentum into game two for an 11-0 win. Jesuit fell to 2-2 in WVIAC play and 5-10 overall while Concord improved to 2-2 in league play and 7-10 overall.
 
In game one, the Cardinals started the scoring in the second inning with two runs on two hits and a pair of walks. Tim Geibel singled down the left field line to start the inning, but was caught stealing second base. Shaun Gutkin followed with a single to right center field, and back-to-back walks by Jordan Medley and Nick Briski loaded the bases. Gutkin scored on Tyler Kowalczyk's fielder's choice and Medley advance to the plate on a wild pitch.
 
The Mountain Lions answered with a run, but Jesuit plated three more in the third inning. Cory Wickham led-off with a double to left field, and Pat Ammar was hit by a pitch. Davia through the left side to load the bases and a Sacrifice fly out  by Geible plated Wickham. Briski followed with a two-RBI single to left field, and the Cardinals led 5-1.
 
Again, Concord answered, but this time, with five unearned runs on three WJU fielding errors and three hits to take a 6-5 advantage. Jesuit tied the game in the fourth inning when Corey Hull walked and scored on a routine ground ball to the shortstop.
 
The Mountain Lions rallied with another big inning in the fifth, scoring six runs on six base hits and a double to establish a 12-6 advantage. Jesuit added a run in the seventh inning as Geibel doubled and Gutkin singled.
 
WJU Parker Lang received the loss on 4.2 innings of work, allowing 11 hits and seven earned runs with two walks and four strikeouts.
 
The Cardinals only managed three hits in the nightcap as Wickham was 2-for-3 with a double and single while John Pyle added a single. The Mountain Lions plated runs in every inning en rote t the 11-0 victory.
 
WJU pitcher Robbie Davia received the loss in three innings of work, allowing four earned runs on eight hits with no walks and a strikeout.
 
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, March 16 against Shepherd University. The doubleheader is schedule for 1 p.m. at the J.B. Chambers I-470 Complex; however, the games may be played at a different location.
