Cardinal Lacrosse Drops Opener to Seton Hill, 19-7

Box Score BETHANY, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse team opened the 2013 season on Tuesday evening, hosting rival and new Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) foe Seton Hill University at Bethany College's Bison Stadium . The Cardinals found the back of the cage first, however, the Griffins responded with six unanswered goals en route to a 19-7 victory. With the win, Seton Hill improved to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in ECAC play while the Cardinals fell to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in the league.
 
Freshman Connor Summers started the scoring, receiving a pass from Brian Frank at the 10-minute mark. Three minutes later, Seton Hill knotted the game, 1-1, and found the back of the cage three additional times for a 4-1 advantage after the first quarter.
 
In the second quarter, the Griffins buried two shots into the net before Jesuit recorded its second goal of the game. At 3:50, Bryce Brochu found Landon DelPrince on the right side of the cage. DelPrince fired the shot past the SHU goalie, cutting the WJU deficit to four goals, 6-2. In the final minute, Seton Hill responded with a goal to take a 7-2 lead into halftime.
 
After the break, Seton Hill's offensive attack exploded for nine-straight goals, establishing a 16-2 advantage. WJU's Kevin Figaniak ended the Griffin run at 6:46 in the fourth quarter, sending the shot off the turf into the top right corner of the cage. After  Seton Hill answered Jesuit's goal, the Cardinals' offense surged with four-straight goals, reducing the deficit to 17-7. Brochu connected on back-to-back shots at 4:01 and 3:29, respectively. Sean Wright recorded the assist on Brochu's first goal and Tyler Johnson assisted the second. Seven seconds later, Wright fired a shot past the SHU goalie, and Brochu found the net again in a man-up situation – Frank was credited with an assist on Brochu's goal. Seton Hill added two goals in the final 1:12 for a 19-7 victory.
 
Cardinal goalie Jim LaPenna recived the loss, recording 14 saves in 48:27 while SHU goalie Chris Ilse earned the win with five saves.
 
SHU won 22-of-the-31 face-offs and held a 38-23 advantage in ground balls.
 
The Cardinals will travel to Philippi, W.Va. on Saturday, February 23 for an ECAC contest with Alderson-Broaddus College. Face-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
