Cardinal Women Comeback Falls Just Short

Box Score

WHEELING, W.Va. - The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team put up a valiant effort against a hot shooting University of Charleston team on Monday night at the McDonough Center, but the Golden Eagles' proved too much for the young Cardinals, taking the 78-69 win.

WJU's shooters were cold in the first half. Charleston, it seemed, couldn't miss, taking a 17-point advantage after 10 minutes, and a 39-26 lead at the halftime break.

The Cardinal's came out in the second half with a surge of energy. Five minutes into the second half, a lay-up by Jaila Bryant cut the Golden Eagle's lead to seven points. From here on in, the game was back and forth, with Charleston clinging to their lead, while the Cardinal's refused to go away.

With 11:22 to go in the second half, the Charleston lead was down to two points, following a clutch three pointer from Emily Robinson, as she returned from the bench. A pair of free throws by Bryant tied the game with 10 minutes and change to play. A Robinson lay-up then gave the Cardinal's their first lead of the game.

The Golden Eagles proved to be too much to handle down the stretch, as a few turnovers and field goals turned the lead back into Charleston's hands, as they closed out their first conference win of the season.

Charleston was led by Chyress Lockhart, who totaled a game high 19 points in 32 minutes. LeAnne Ross added 18 solid points, while going 3 of 6 from behind the arc.

Wheeling Jesuit was led by Alex Anderson, who had a team high 16 points to go along with a team high eight rebounds. Breanna Butler and Jaila Bryant respectively chipped in 15 points each.

"I was really proud in the second half. I think we looked like a new team," said Wheeling Jesuit Head Coach Debbie Buff. "We battled back, and never gave up. They are as good as anyone in our conference, and getting down early is always tough to come back from."

The Wheeling Jesuit Women's Basketball team will be back in action on December 5th, when they travel to Urbana University.
